The Channell family home is Fawn Grove, Pennsylvania.  The family has lived in and around that small York County town since the 18th century.  A distant branch of the family lives there still.

In the early 1900s, Albert Channell, Sr. moved to Baltimore City and his family and many of their descendants live in the region to this day.  The easiest way to distinguish the Pennsylvania and Maryland Channells is by the way they pronounce their surname.  The Pennsylvania Channells pronounced it "chan-nel" (like a television channel), while the Maryland Channells pronounce it "shuh-nel" (like the perfume).  It is thought that Albert Channell, Sr.'s wife, Ruth LeCompte may be responsible for initiating this change, believing that the name was French in origin.  This was probably a mistake however, as the family appears to have either an English or Scotch-Irish heritage.

Diary

21 Feb 2005, I visited with Libby Channell and her sister Phoebe to look over old photos and discuss genealogy. I was able to scan some great pictures of Sam and his father William C. Channell.

30 Jul 2006, I visited with Diane (Elgin) Channell and transcribed the original land indenture between William and Margaret (Channell) Webb and William Channell.

George Washington Channell (111) was born on 31 Dec 1858 at Pennsylvania, USA. He was baptized on 27 Jul 1867 according to the Castle Fin Circuit Records. He and Elizabeth E. Ferry (112), daughter of John Ferry (6711) and (wife) (--?--) (7113), were married by Pastor W. Stevens of Princess St. Me E Church, and witnessed by A. R. Decker on 23 Aug 1883 at Fawn Grove, York County, Pennsylvania, USA. He died on 21 Apr 1937 at Fawn Grove, York County, Pennsylvania, USA, at age 78.

The family Bible recounted the event with:

"April 21 - [Mr. Channell] died here today from grief when his wife, Elizabeth, died last Tuesday, Mr. Channell was overcome by sorrow. The brokenhearted man told his family and friends, `I don't want to live anymore.' Ailing for several years, the 78 year-old sawyer `willed to die.' His health suddenly took a turn for the worse, complications developed. The kindly care of his family and every medical attention could not shake his determination to join his wife in the Great Beyond. Death occurred at 6pm, today, exactly eight days after his wife's passing."

His certificate of death claims that he had a valvular disease of the heart, and died of bronchial pneumonia. Funeral services were held on 24 Apr 1937 at W. Howard Webb Funeral Home. He was buried at Fawn Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Fawn Grove, York County, Pennsylvania, USA.
