METCALFs Sarah R. Metcalf (c1836-1900) I have been unable to much information about the Metcalf family. It doesn't help that there are dozens of ways to spell the surname. More Family Elijah Medcalf (c1798-a1864) Links Diary 23 Feb 2005, Today I found something intriguing. It appears that there was a Rebeca Medcalf (indexed as Meacalf, grrr!) living in Baltimore City in 1850. She was 14 years old (b. cir 1836, Maryland) and the daughter of Elijah and Sarah (Potee) Medcalf. I am hoping to learn more about the family. 03 Jan 2005, Stopped by Willow Bend Books in Westminster today and browsed through the 2003 publication "Some Descendants of Rev. Leonard Metcalf of Tarrerford Parish, Norfolk, England" by Howard H. Metcalfe. A nice book, but it doesn't appear to contain any information on this line. |
Elijah Medcalf (531) was born circa 1798 at Maryland, USA. He married Sarah Potee (532), daughter of Elizabeth Potee (533), on 22 Feb 1827 at Baltimore City, Maryland, USA. He was a cabinet maker from 1827 to 1864 at Baltimore City, Maryland, USA. Children of Elijah Medcalf and Sarah Potee all born at Maryland, USA, were as follows:
Note: Rebeca (listed above) may be the Sarah Rebecca Metcalf who married Allen A. Channell. She is the same age, born in the correct state, and the only Rebecca Medcalf in Maryland in 1850. I am hoping to be able to find some marriage or will information that proves the two are same person.
Note: Pre-1850 censuses have a limited usefulness. Following are my current assumptions based on the data provided. Elijah Metcalf is clearly listed and his age (42 in 1840) may account for the "40 & under 50" mark (col. 7). No one else is listed by name. There are two females aged "20 & under 30", one of which could be Sarah (Potee) Medcalf (28 in 1840). Another female aged "60 & under 70" could be Elizabeth Potee (aged 60 in 1840). There are four females aged "5 & under 10"; these could be: Emily J. Metcalf (10 in 1840), Elizabeth Medcalf (8 in 1840), Amanda Medcalf (6 in 1840), and Rebeca Medcalf (4 in 1840). Francis Medcalf wouldn't be born for another year. There are additional marks in the household that are more difficult to explain. The important thing however is that everyone of age in the 1850 census can be accounted for in the 1840.
