STANLEYs John D. Standley
(1784-1859) Our Stanley family first appear in the southwest Virginia and North Carolina regions following the American Revolutionary War. It is likely they lived in the area long before that (Stanleys appear in the area well into the 1700s), but the records of the region for that time are incomplete and/or ambiguous. Our branch of the family remained in the Appalachian mountains until the 1930s when James Calvin Stanley (my grandfather) joined the Army and met his soon-to-be wife Dolores Mae Boddice in Batlimore, Maryland. James and Dolores had two boys which stayed in the Baltimore area. Their families live in the broader region to this day. Researchers Sandra Wells, desc. of Joseph & Lydia (McFall) Stanley Links |
Noah Larkin Stanley (109) was born to "Bettie
Mullins and Floyd Stanley" on 16 Jul 1875 at Linden, Buchanan County,
Virginia, USA. Noah's childhood is shrouded in mystery, probably due to
an illegitimate birth. It is known that he was raised by his grandparents,
Lovel S. Stanley and Isabel
Louvina Wright following his mother's marriage to "Flat John"
Mullins. He married Isabelle Deel (206),
daughter of John Henry Deel (3827) and Isabelle Louvina Wright (1435),
on 17 Apr 1889 at Dickenson County, Virginia, USA. The marriage of Noah
Stanley and Isabelle Deel was short-lived, ending with divorce proceedings
held at the Wise County Courthouse. During these proceedings, Isabelle
Deel was portraryed as having been adulterous for several years, despite
the fact she was only about 13 at the time of marriage. As a result, Isabelle
Deel was forbidden by the court to re-marry for years to come. He and
Nancy Elizabeth Gilliam (110) were
granted license to marry on 10 Jul 1891 at Dickenson County, Virginia,
USA. He married Nancy Elizabeth Gilliam (110), daughter of (--?--) Gilliam
(341) and Lucinda (--?--) (3824), on 11 Jul 1891 at Dickenson County,
Virginia, USA. He married Martha Ellen
Salyer (205), daughter of Reuben Salyer (151) and Mary Powers (152),
on 11 Mar 1902 at Dickenson County, Virginia, USA. He and Flora
Milton (2429) were granted license to marry on 25 Jun 1918 at Wise
County, Virginia, USA, by Deputy Clerk, C. M. Freeman. He and Flora Milton
(2429) were certified to be married by Deputy Clerk, C. M. Freeman on
25 Jun 1918 at Wise County, Virginia, USA. He and Flora Milton (2429),
daughter of Will Milton (10887), were married by Minister, J. B. Randall
on 8 Jul 1918 at Norton, Wise County, Virginia, USA. He was granted a
divorce from Flora Milton (2429) on 18 Sep 1919 at Wise, Wise County,
Virginia, USA. He and Amanda (--?--)
(207) were granted license to marry on 8 Dec 1919 at Wise County, Virginia,
USA, by County Clerk, C. M. Freeman. He and Amanda (--?--) (207), daughter
of (father) (--?--) (14058) and (mother) (--?--) (14059), were married
by Elder, F. M. Strong on 8 Dec 1919 at Appalachia, Wise County, Virginia,
USA. He died on 17 Sep 1941 at Toms Creek, Wise County, Virginia, USA,
at age 66. He was buried on 19 Sep 1941 at Jackson-Odle Cemetery, Toms
Creek, Wise County, Virginia, USA.
Children of Noah Larkin Stanley (109) and Martha Ellen Salyer (205) all born at Virginia, USA, were as follows:
There were no children of Noah Larkin Stanley (109) and Flora Milton (2429). Children of Noah Larkin Stanley (109) and Amanda (--?--) (207) were:
Note: Before I began researching Noah L. Stanley, I was told that he'd married many times. One story even suggested that he married one woman twice (Lizzie Gilliam). Note: Noah L. Stanley's parentage is a bit of a mystery (which is why the Stanley ancestral tree to the left branches through a maternal line). There are more than one "Bettie Mullins" and "Floyd Stanley" in the area at the time of his birth, but none are married together. After years of searching and speaking with people from the region, his mother's identity (Isabelle Elizabeth Stanley) became clear but his father's identity remains a point of conjecture. If I had to make a guess, I would lean toward William Floyd Stanley, son of William D. Stanley and Anada Emaline Long. This would make Floyd and Bettie first cousins, which might be why they didn't marry after Noah's birth. Both went on to marry separately (i.e. Floyd to Elizabeth Wright and Bettie to "Flat John" Mullins). At this same time, Noah appears in the 1880 Federal Census in household of his grandparents, Lovel S. Stanley and Isabelle Louvina Wright.
