Hans Georg Utz (1683-1766)
Hans Jacob Utz (1704-c1775)
Heinrick Jacob Utz (c1740-c1789)
Anna Elizabeth Utz (1772-1862)

Our Utz ancestors can be found in the Province of Alsace in the 17th century. It appears that they emigrated through Rotterdam into the Port of Philadelphia in 1733. From Pennsylvania, they appear to have moved south into Carroll County, Maryland with some branches continuing into Shenandoah County, Virginia, and finally into Indiana. Much of the preliminary Utz family research was compiled by Jack Ott.

I'm hoping that we're related to the potato chip people! The Utz company (aka Utz Quality Foods, Inc.) of Hanover, Pennsylvania was founded in 1921 by William D. Utz and his wife Salie.

Diary

21 Feb 2005, I visited the old St. David's Lutheran Church in Hanover, Pennsylvania. I discovered the 'new' one first and had to be directed to the old church, which is now a United Church of Christ. Found 'many' Utz tombstones, including my 5th great grandmother 'Elisabeth Utz'. Many of the old 18th cent. German stones were in excellent condition while others were worn, lichen-covered, and generally unreadable.

Anna Elizabeth Utz (7356) was born on 14 Apr 1771 at Baltimore County, Maryland, Great Britain. She married Lorentz Fried (7355) circa 1795.

She died on 11 Jul 1862 at age 90. She was buried at the old St. David's Lutheran Church Cemetery, West Manheim, York County, Pennsylvania, USA.

  1. Jacob Leroy Fried (947) was born on 5 Oct 1805 at Maryland, USA. He and Elizabeth Sherman (948) were married by Jacob Albert on 18 Aug 1835.
  2. Catherine Fried (7361) was born between 1810 and 1814 at Maryland, USA. She married Josiah Boose (7362).
  3. Rachael Fried (7363) was born on 28 Jan 1813. She married Peter Utz (7364).
  4. Mary Fried (7357) married Thomas Bortner (7358).
  5. Elizabeth Fried (7359) married Henry Minter (7360).

Note: Elizabeth appears in the household of her son-in-law Josiah Boose. The enumerator for the 1860 census misspelled Elizabeth's lastname as "Freat".

Note: Elizabeth appears as the head of household in the 1850 census, her husband Lorentz having died 13 years before. The enumerator was either sloppy or given bad information for this household. Catherine's age for instance, is off by six years.
